中国移动不是卖手机的，但手机销售却成为其一项完全可以独立运营的业务来自易观国际的研究报告称：运营商大张旗鼓地定制手机已经成为一种潮流。在2004年，中国移动和中国联通手机定制采购数量达到500万部手机，实际采购金额超过80亿元，定制手机的数量占2004年国内全部手机销售量的7%。而在2005年，在国内销售的全部8800万台手机中，有1100多万台是运营商定制的，定制手机所占比例约13%。而在未来的4g时代，运营商手机定制主导手机终端市场的力度将会更大。
